Egypt mourns 'headscarf martyr'

For those of you who haven't heard the tragic news already, here is the BBC article:

Egypt mourns 'headscarf martyr'

Demonstration in Cairo proclaiming Marwa Sherbini the Hijab Martyr

The body of a Muslim woman, killed in a German courtroom by a man convicted of insulting her religion, has been taken back to her native Egypt for burial.

Marwa Sherbini, 31, was stabbed 18 times by Axel W, who is now under arrest in Dresden for suspected murder.

Husband Elwi Okaz is also in a critical condition in hospital, after being injured as he tried to save his wife.

Ms Sherbini had sued her killer after he called her a "terrorist" because of her headscarf.

The case has attracted much attention in Egypt and the Muslim world.

German prosecutors have said the 28-year-old attacker, identified only as Axel W, was driven by a deep hatred of foreigners and Muslims.

'Martyr'

Medics were unable to save Ms Sherbini who was three months pregnant with her second child. Her three-year-old son was with the family in court when she was killed.

Axel W and Ms Sherbini and family were in court for his appeal against a fine of 750 euros ($1,050) for insulting her in 2008, apparently because she was wearing the Muslim headscarf or Hijab.

Newspapers in Egypt have expressed outrage at the case, asking how it was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab".

Senior Egyptian officials and German diplomatic staff attended the funeral in Alexandria along with hundreds of mourners.

Media reports say Mr Okaz was injured both by the attacker and when a policeman opened fire in the courtroom.

inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon. Incredible. May Allah forgive her, have mercy upon her, and enter her into Jannah as a shaheedah, ameen.

ameen to abu yusuf's prayer!

i am so proud of this sister for taking a stand against this man's evil words! usually sisters are told such dirty things and just let it effect them emotionally but she took this man to court. i hope though this doesn't scare other sisters from standing up for what is right. she died defending the beauty of islam and therefore, she defines they beauty of islam. that a woman can be modest and intelligent and will not be walked all over!!!

inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon. May God accept her (and her unborn baby) in the highest level of jannah inshAllah ameen! May He also bring closure and ease to the family that still remains.

This is a sick world we live in, that such hatred can happen. I've heard now they are classifying him (the attacker) as being deranged and having metal problems.

SubhnAllah my heart goes out to her and her family!!

I'm horrified that such hatred walks in the world.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

May this woman's family find comfort in knowing she did what was right and is receiving her reward.

Hi,
As a non Muslim I wanted to extend my sympathies to this family and to all Muslims around the world who are hurt by this ignorant man's actions. I also would like to extend my sympathies to those who are just hoping the world can move into a more loving direction. I know many Muslim women who wear the hijab and I respect them very much for it and support them as well. It hurts me to know that this man committed such a crime and it's yet to even be put on TV. Not only if it were a Muslim would it be on thenews, but it would also be a documentary! But now that the tables have turned and the Muslim is the victim no one is there to tell her story. It is very tragic and sad that something like that happened in this century.

May Allah swt grant our brave sister whose blood is shed in the path of Allah swt. this is not the first victim i think there are thousands of muslimahs being insulted for wearing hijabs. i my self has encountered such ignorant polythesist. we'll face such idiots but we must be defending ourselves like this sister.
